Getting your car impounded can be an incredibly stressful time. It can be a daunting experience, where you’re unsure of what the next step is that you should take.

As a result we have put together a quick guide to help you get your car released from a police impound quickly after being seized.

Step 1. Locate Your Impounded Vehicle

Usually when your car is impounded you will receive a seizure notice. This will tell you where your vehicle has been taken, and a list of the documents you will need to get it back.

Although this is unlikely, it is possible that you will not know where your vehicle is going to be impounded. This can happen when your car is towed away without your consent.

When this happens it is very important to locate your vehicle which can be done by calling up the City Council. The clerk there should be able to see where your car was impounded by using your registration number.

However if they are still unable to find it, it may be that the impound has not got it on record yet. In this case wait a few hours and call back.

Step 2: Take Out Impounded Car Insurance

The next step is to make sure you have the correct impounded car insurance in place. There are limited companies that will be able to provide this type of insurance. However it is worth making sure that you chose a company that you can trust.

Additionally, it is essential that you disclaim any relevant information, such as driving offences, to the insurers. If you fail to do so your car may not be released when you go to the impound. This will be due to your insurance not being correct. As a result it can be extremely costly as you will likely have to take out another policy.

At this point it will be useful to make yourself a checklist of all the documents you will need to take with you to the impound. This will include a driving licence, the correct impounded car insurance and proof of ownership of the car.

Step 3: Get your Car Released!

Once you have got everything on your check list you are then ready to head to the impound to get your car released. If everything is in order with your documents, the staff at the impound will stamp your seizure notice. This means you will then be allowed to reclaim your vehicle.

Please bear in mind that you may be subject to daily storage fees and towing chargers so may sure you are able to pay this when you arrive there.
